Our story

A heritagesince 1850

Ma Taung was born in 1830. By 1850 Mandalay knew her as Daw Taung, and knew her laphet. Ah yee means aunt; the name on every pack is hers.

More than 175 years on, the shop is still on 86th Street, and the laphet is still made with the same care.

Laphet culture

Laphet is more than food

In Myanmar, laphet is how you say welcome. It is set out when guests arrive, after a meal, at weddings and at the monastery. A symbol of sharing, and of a culture that brings people together.
